Tidal Energy: The Unsung Hero of Renewable Power that’s Still Struggling to Make Waves

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Tidal Energy: The Unsung Hero of Renewable Power that’s Still Struggling to Make Waves

As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of climate change, renewable energy has emerged as a beacon of hope. Solar and wind power have been the darlings of the industry, with billions of dollars invested in these sectors. But amidst all the hype, a quiet giant has been largely overlooked: tidal energy. You might be surprised to learn that despite its massive potential, tidal power still accounts for a mere 0.01% of global electricity production. It’s time to shine a light on this underappreciated technology and explore why it’s struggled to gain traction.

Tidal energy harnesses the immense power of ocean tides, using buoys or underwater turbines to capture the kinetic energy generated by the rise and fall of the sea. This predictable and reliable source of power is estimated to have the potential to meet 10% of the world’s electricity demand. But despite its promise, tidal energy has faced a host of challenges, from the high upfront costs of installing and maintaining the infrastructure to the complexities of navigating the marine environment.

One of the main reasons tidal energy has struggled to compete with other renewables is the cost. Building a single tidal turbine can cost upwards of $20 million, making it a pricey proposition for developers. Additionally, the maintenance costs of these underwater machines can be significant, with many predicting that the cost of energy generated by tidal power will need to come down by at least 50% to be competitive with other forms of renewable energy.

Another hurdle tidal energy has faced is the environmental impact. The installation of tidal turbines can disrupt marine ecosystems, and the noise generated by these machines can be a concern for marine life. To mitigate these effects, developers have turned to more innovative designs, such as tidal kites and flying turbines, which can be more efficient and have a lower environmental footprint.

Despite these challenges, there are signs that tidal energy is starting to gain momentum. In 2020, the world’s largest tidal energy project, the MeyGen tidal array, was completed off the coast of Scotland. This 398-megawatt project is expected to generate enough electricity to power over 175,000 homes. Other countries, such as China and South Korea, are also investing heavily in tidal energy, with plans to deploy hundreds of turbines in the coming years.

So what does the future hold for tidal energy? While it’s unlikely to become a dominant player in the renewable energy market anytime soon, tidal power has the potential to play a significant role in the global energy mix. As technology improves and costs come down, we can expect to see more widespread adoption of this innovative energy source.

As we look to the future, it’s clear that tidal energy is not just a novelty, but a crucial component of our transition to a low-carbon economy. By investing in this technology and addressing the challenges it faces, we can unlock a new source of renewable energy that’s as reliable as it is sustainable. The time to make waves in the tidal energy sector is now.
