The Dark Side of Renewable Energy Exhibitions: Why They’re Not as Green as You Think

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Dark Side of Renewable Energy Exhibitions: Why They’re Not as Green as You Think

As the world grapples with the existential threat of climate change, renewable energy exhibitions have become the norm. Every year, cities around the globe host massive events showcasing the latest innovations in solar, wind, and hydro power. The idea is to bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and academics to drive progress towards a sustainable future. But are these exhibitions really as effective as we think?

The answer is a resounding no. Behind the gleaming solar panels and wind turbines, a more sinister reality lurks. Renewable energy exhibitions are often little more than marketing ploys, designed to peddle expensive technology to governments and corporations eager to appear environmentally conscious. The events are often funded by the very companies profiting from the energy sector, creating a conflict of interest that undermines the entire purpose of the exhibition.

Take, for example, the annual Paris Air Show, where major airlines and energy companies tout their latest sustainable aviation fuel developments. Sounds like a great idea, right? Not so fast. Many of these companies have significant investments in fossil fuels, and their push for sustainable aviation fuel is little more than a PR stunt. The real goal is to greenwash their image and maintain their grip on the energy market.

But it’s not just the big players that are guilty of greenwashing. Many small startups and entrepreneurs also attend renewable energy exhibitions with the express intention of selling their wares to unsuspecting investors. These companies often promise the world but deliver nothing more than overpriced gadgets and unproven technology.

So, what’s the alternative? Instead of attending expensive exhibitions, many experts suggest focusing on grassroots initiatives and community-led projects. These projects often involve local residents working together to develop and implement renewable energy solutions that are tailored to their specific needs. Not only are these projects more effective, but they also provide a more authentic and sustainable approach to addressing the climate crisis.

For instance, in the town of Mondragon, Spain, residents have come together to develop a community-owned renewable energy cooperative. The cooperative has installed solar panels on rooftops and wind turbines on local farms, generating enough electricity to power nearly 10,000 homes. The project has not only reduced carbon emissions but also created jobs and stimulated local economic growth.

The Mondragon model is just one example of how renewable energy can be truly democratized. By moving away from large-scale exhibitions and towards community-led initiatives, we can create a more inclusive and sustainable energy future. It’s time to rethink the role of renewable energy exhibitions and focus on the real heroes: the people who are working tirelessly to build a better world.
