Tidal Energy: The Unsung Hero of Renewable Power That’s Still Struggling to Make a Splash

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Tidal Energy: The Unsung Hero of Renewable Power That’s Still Struggling to Make a Splash

For years, the renewable energy landscape has been dominated by solar and wind power. But amidst the hype surrounding these two giants, a quieter player has been quietly making waves: tidal energy. This power source, which harnesses the predictable and powerful forces of the ocean tides, has been touted as a game-changer for our planet’s energy needs. However, despite its promise, tidal energy remains woefully underutilized – a fact that’s both astonishing and infuriating.

One reason tidal energy has failed to gain traction is its reputation for being expensive and impractical. We’re often told that the costs of building and maintaining tidal power plants are prohibitively high, and that the technology is still in its infancy. But what if I told you that these concerns are largely overstated? In reality, the costs of tidal energy have been dropping rapidly in recent years, and some of the most promising innovations are coming from companies that are rethinking the traditional approach to tidal power.

Take, for example, the work being done by OpenHydro, a Canadian company that’s developed a revolutionary new turbine design that’s capable of harnessing the energy of the ocean tides with unprecedented efficiency. By using a novel combination of hydrofoils and magnetic levitation, OpenHydro’s turbines can capture the kinetic energy of the tides with far greater precision than traditional designs. And because they’re designed to operate in the ocean’s harsh environment, they can withstand the toughest conditions without sacrificing performance.

Another innovation that’s poised to disrupt the tidal energy landscape is the use of floating power plants. These “offshore farms” can be deployed in the open ocean, where the tides are strongest, and can operate independently of the coast. By using advanced materials and designs, these floating power plants can generate power with minimal environmental impact – a major advantage over traditional tidal power plants, which often require extensive coastal infrastructure.

So why, then, is tidal energy still struggling to gain traction? One reason is the lack of policy support. Unlike solar and wind power, which have received dedicated funding and tax credits, tidal energy has been largely neglected by policymakers. But as the world shifts towards a low-carbon future, the tide is finally starting to turn in favor of tidal energy.

In the UK, for example, the government has launched a major initiative to develop the country’s tidal energy resources. The UK’s first commercial tidal power plant, the MeyGen tidal array, is currently under construction in the Orkney Islands, and is expected to generate enough power for 175,000 homes. And in the US, the Department of Energy has launched a new funding program to support the development of tidal energy technologies.

As the world awakens to the potential of tidal energy, we can expect to see a major transformation in the way we think about renewable power. Tidal energy has the potential to provide a steady, predictable stream of energy that can help power our homes, industries, and transportation systems. And with the right policy support and technological innovations, it’s an opportunity that we simply can’t afford to miss.
