We’re Already Energy Independent – But It’s Not What You Think

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on We’re Already Energy Independent – But It’s Not What You Think

As the conversation around energy independence continues to gain momentum, I’m here to throw a wrench into the works. We’re already energy independent, but it’s not the type of independence you might be thinking of. It’s not about breaking free from foreign oil or relying solely on renewable energy sources. It’s more nuanced than that.

The truth is, our energy independence is largely tied to our reliance on cheap, readily available energy sources like coal and natural gas. These fossil fuels have enabled us to power our homes, businesses, and industries with relative ease, but at a significant environmental and health cost. The air we breathe is polluted, the water we drink is contaminated, and the climate is paying the price.

But here’s the thing: this kind of energy independence is a false narrative. We’re not really independent when we rely on finite resources that are controlled by a handful of wealthy nations. We’re not independent when our energy choices are driven by profit margins and corporate interests, rather than by what’s best for people and the planet.

So, what does true energy independence look like? For starters, it means recognizing that energy is not just a resource, but a fundamental right. It means prioritizing decentralized, community-led energy systems that put the power back in the hands of local people. It means embracing a diversity of energy sources, from solar and wind to geothermal and hydrogen, to create a resilient and adaptable energy grid.

It also means acknowledging that energy independence is inextricably linked to issues of economic justice, social equity, and environmental sustainability. We need to rethink our notion of “independence” and recognize that it’s not just about freeing ourselves from external dependencies, but also about building a more just and equitable world.

Take, for example, the story of rural communities in Africa who are using solar-powered energy cooperatives to electrify their homes and businesses. These cooperatives are not only generating clean energy, but they’re also creating jobs, improving healthcare outcomes, and empowering local leaders. This is what true energy independence looks like – not just a technical fix, but a social and economic transformation.

Of course, achieving this kind of energy independence won’t be easy. It will require significant investments in infrastructure, education, and policy. But it’s a journey worth taking, because the alternative is a future where energy is controlled by a privileged few, and the rest of us are left to suffer the consequences.

So, let’s redefine what we mean by energy independence. Let’s make it about more than just access to cheap energy – let’s make it about building a world that’s powered by people, not just profits.
