The Circular Economy Myth: Why Recycling Isn’t Saving the Planet

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Circular Economy Myth: Why Recycling Isn’t Saving the Planet

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of World Environment Day, it’s time to confront a harsh reality: our beloved circular economy isn’t living up to the hype. The concept, which involves designing out waste and the continuous circulation of products, materials, and resources, has been touted as the panacea for our ailing planet. But is it really?

The truth is, despite the abundance of recycling programs and “sustainable” packaging, the circular economy is still largely a myth. Here’s why: our current system is built on a flawed premise that we can simply close the loop and create a world where nothing goes to waste. But the reality is far more complex, and our addiction to consumption and growth is still driving the very problems we’re trying to solve.

Take, for example, the myth of “recycling as waste reduction.” While it’s true that recycling has become a more prominent part of our daily lives, the numbers simply don’t add up. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that only about 34% of municipal solid waste is actually recycled, with the majority of the rest ending up in landfills or incinerators. Meanwhile, the global production of plastic waste continues to skyrocket, with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimating that over 8 million tons of plastic waste enter our oceans every year.

But it’s not just the numbers that are a problem – it’s the underlying philosophy that’s driving our approach to sustainability. We’re still stuck in a linear economy mindset, where growth is the ultimate goal and resources are seen as infinite. We’re producing more, consuming more, and discarding more than ever before, with the resulting waste and pollution posing an existential threat to our planet.

So, what’s the solution? It’s time to rethink our approach to sustainability and move beyond the myth of the circular economy. We need to start prioritizing a new set of values, ones that prioritize sharing, reuse, and repair over consumption and growth. We need to invest in technologies that can break down complex materials, like plastics and textiles, into their raw components, rather than just recycling them into new products. And we need to hold our leaders accountable for the true costs of consumption and the impact of their policies on the environment.

It’s time to wake up from the circular economy dream and face the reality of our consumption-driven society. We can do better, but it will require a fundamental shift in our values, our behaviors, and our economic systems. The good news is, there are already innovators and entrepreneurs working on solutions that challenge the status quo, from product-as-a-service models to biodegradable materials. It’s time to join the revolution and create a new economy that truly puts the planet first.
