The Circular Economy is a Myth: Why We Need to Rethink Our Approach to Sustainability

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Circular Economy is a Myth: Why We Need to Rethink Our Approach to Sustainability

As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, waste management, and resource depletion, the concept of the circular economy has gained significant traction in recent years. Proponents of the circular economy argue that it’s the key to a sustainable future, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible, and waste is minimized. But is this really the case?

The truth is, the circular economy is more of a buzzword than a reality. While it sounds great in theory, the practical implementation of circular economy principles is often woefully inadequate. In many cases, companies and governments are simply rebranding their existing linear business models as “circular” in order to appear more sustainable.

Take, for example, the concept of product-as-a-service. This is often touted as a circular economy innovation, where companies provide products to consumers on a subscription basis, reducing waste and the need for new raw materials. Sounds great, right? But in reality, many of these models are little more than a way for companies to extend the life of their products, while still selling them at a profit. The underlying linear supply chain remains largely intact.

Another common misconception is that the circular economy is all about recycling. While recycling is certainly an important part of a circular economy, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. The real challenge lies in designing products and systems that are inherently restorative and regenerative by design. This means creating products that are made from recycled materials, can be easily disassembled and refurbished, and are designed to have a minimum impact on the environment.

So, what’s the problem? One major issue is that the circular economy is often seen as a technical fix, rather than a fundamental transformation of our economic system. We’re trying to retrofit a linear economic system that’s based on growth, consumption, and waste onto a circular framework that’s based on sharing, collaboration, and regeneration. It’s a bit like trying to turn a car into a bicycle – it’s just not going to work.

Another problem is that the circular economy is often championed by companies that have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. Take, for example, the chemical industry, which is one of the largest polluters on the planet. Suddenly, they’re all about circularity and sustainability. But when you scratch beneath the surface, you often find that their circular economy initiatives are little more than greenwashing.

So, what’s the alternative? Rather than trying to retrofit our existing economic system, we need to start thinking about a completely new kind of economy – one that’s based on sharing, collaboration, and regeneration. This means creating new business models that prioritize the health of the planet over profit, and designing products and systems that are inherently restorative and regenerative by design.

It’s time to rethink our approach to sustainability and move beyond the circular economy myth. We need to start thinking about a new kind of economy that’s based on the principles of sharing, collaboration, and regeneration. Only then can we create a truly sustainable future – one that works for both people and the planet.
