The Tidal Wave of the Future: How Ocean Current Energy Can Power Our World

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Tom Clansy No Comments on The Tidal Wave of the Future: How Ocean Current Energy Can Power Our World

Did you know that the world’s oceans are capable of generating over 3 terawatts of renewable energy, enough to power over 100 million homes? And yet, a staggering 96% of this potential remains untapped. This is the reality of ocean current energy, a largely unexplored and underutilized source of clean power that has the potential to revolutionize the way we generate energy.

Ocean current energy harnesses the kinetic energy of the ocean’s tides, currents, and waves to generate electricity. This renewable energy source is unlike any other, with the ability to provide a steady and reliable source of power, even in areas where other forms of renewable energy are scarce.

One of the most promising areas of ocean current energy is in the use of tidal stream generators, which are essentially underwater turbines that harness the energy of tidal currents. These turbines can be installed in areas with high tidal ranges, such as in the Bay of Fundy in Canada or the Severn Estuary in the UK, where the tidal currents are strong and consistent.

But ocean current energy is not limited to tidal streams. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems, for example, use the temperature difference between the warm surface waters and cold deep waters of the ocean to generate electricity. This technology has been tested in several locations around the world, including Hawaii and Japan, and has shown great promise.

The benefits of ocean current energy are numerous. Not only is it a renewable and sustainable source of power, but it also has the potential to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Additionally, ocean current energy can provide a new source of income for coastal communities, creating jobs and stimulating local economies.

Despite the many benefits, there are still significant challenges to overcome before ocean current energy can become a mainstream source of power. The high upfront costs of installing and maintaining ocean current energy systems, as well as the complexity of integrating them into the existing energy grid, are major hurdles that must be addressed.

However, researchers and companies are working tirelessly to develop new technologies and solutions that will make ocean current energy more accessible and affordable. From advanced materials and designs to innovative financing models, the future of ocean current energy looks bright.

As we move forward, it’s essential that we prioritize the development and deployment of ocean current energy technologies. With the world’s oceans covering over 70% of the planet’s surface, harnessing their power is an obvious solution to our energy needs. The time to tap into the tidal wave of the future is now.
