When most of us think about solar energy, the image that pops into our heads is a rooftop dotted with photovoltaic panels quietly soaking up sunlight. But there’s another way to tap into the sun’s immense power that often flies under the radar: concentrated solar power, or CSP. Unlike traditional solar panels that directly convert sunlight into electricity, CSP uses mirrors or lenses to focus sunlight onto a small area to produce intense heat. That heat then generates electricity, often by driving steam turbines, similar to conventional power plants.

What makes CSP really intriguing is its potential to store energy efficiently. Because the system generates heat, it can store thermal energy in materials like molten salt, allowing power generation even after the sun has set. This overcomes one of solar energy’s biggest hurdles — intermittency. Imagine a solar plant that continues to supply electricity into the night or during cloudy spells — it’s closer than many think.

CSP plants typically require large open spaces with consistent sunlight, usually desert regions. That’s why you’ll find some of the most impressive CSP installations in sun-drenched parts of the world like the American Southwest, Spain, and the Middle East. These plants can provide clean, dispatchable power at a scale that rooftop panels can’t, making them promising candidates for expanding renewable energy infrastructure.

However, CSP isn’t without challenges. The upfront costs and infrastructure demands are significantly higher than conventional solar panels. Plus, environmental concerns arise from land use and water consumption in arid areas where these plants are built. But advances in technology and hybrid systems are helping to mitigate some of these issues, making CSP an increasingly viable option.

So, while photovoltaic solar panels grab most headlines, concentrated solar power quietly offers a compelling path forward. It’s a technology that pushes the boundaries of what solar energy can achieve — providing steady, scalable, and cleaner power from our ever-generous sun. As we look toward a future that needs more sustainable energy, CSP deserves more of our attention and investment.
