The numbers are staggering: it’s estimated that just 100 companies are responsible for more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. Oil majors, coal miners, and other industrial giants have been polluting our planet for decades, with little to no accountability. Meanwhile, governments and corporations have been quietly greenwashed, convincing us that individual actions – like using public transport or buying carbon credits – are the key to solving the climate crisis.

But here’s the thing: those individual actions don’t actually add up to much. According to a recent study, even if every single person on the planet took the most drastic measures to reduce their carbon footprint, it would only reduce global emissions by 1.4% by 2030. Meanwhile, the richest 10% of the global population produce 45% of emissions, while the poorest 10% produce just 1%.
This is not to say that individual actions have no value. But what if we were to shift the conversation from personal guilt to collective action? What if we focused on dismantling the systems that perpetuate inequality and environmental degradation, rather than just tweaking our personal habits?
It’s time to rethink the climate change narrative. Instead of scapegoating individual consumers, we need to hold corporations and governments accountable for their role in driving pollution and inequality. We need to adopt policies that prioritize the public good over profit, and that support the most vulnerable communities in their fight against climate change.
So, are we doing climate change? Not exactly. But we can – and must – do better. It’s time to get real about the scale and complexity of the problem, and to start building a movement that’s not just about personal responsibility, but about collective action and systemic change.
