The Solar PV Module Revolution is Overhyped: Here’s Why

Posted on May 24, 2025 By Amanda White No Comments on The Solar PV Module Revolution is Overhyped: Here’s Why

As the world continues to shift towards renewable energy sources, solar PV modules have become a staple in the industry. We’re constantly being told that solar panels are the future, that they’re going to save us from climate change, and that they’re the key to energy independence. But is this really the case? I’d argue that the solar PV module revolution is overhyped, and that we need to take a step back to assess the reality of these so-called “game-changing” panels.

Firstly, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: efficiency. Solar PV modules are not as efficient as we’re led to believe. The average solar panel converts around 15-20% of sunlight into electricity, which means that a significant amount of energy is being lost in the process. Compare this to traditional fossil fuel-based power plants, which are capable of converting around 33-40% of energy into electricity. Yes, you read that right – our current solar panels are less efficient than the old-school energy sources we’re trying to replace!

But what about the cost? We’re constantly being told that solar panels are becoming cheaper and more affordable, and that they’re now within reach of the average consumer. But let’s look at the bigger picture: the cost of solar panels is still prohibitively expensive for many countries, particularly those in developing regions. In fact, a study by the International Renewable Energy Agency found that in 2020, the average cost of a solar PV module was around $250 per watt, which is still far too high for many people to afford.

And then there’s the issue of lifespan. We’re told that solar panels can last for up to 30 years or more, but the reality is that many panels are already showing signs of degradation within the first 10-15 years of operation. This means that the energy generated by these panels will actually decrease over time, rather than increase.

So, what’s the real story behind solar PV modules? Are they really the key to our energy future, or are they just a solution in search of a problem? The truth is, solar panels are just one part of a much larger energy puzzle. We need to be looking at a range of solutions, from energy efficiency measures to wind power, hydroelectricity, and even nuclear energy.

It’s time to take a step back and reassess the hype surrounding solar PV modules. They’re not the silver bullet we’ve been led to believe, but rather just one piece of the energy equation. By taking a more nuanced approach to energy generation, we can create a more sustainable, more equitable, and more efficient energy future – one that doesn’t rely solely on overhyped solar panels.
