Tidal Energy: The Unsung Hero of Renewable Power that’s Being Held Back by Red Tape

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Tidal Energy: The Unsung Hero of Renewable Power that’s Being Held Back by Red Tape

For decades, tidal energy has been touted as a game-changer in the quest for renewable, sustainable power. And yet, despite its massive potential, the industry has struggled to gain traction. But is it really the fault of technology, or is it something more insidious? The truth is, tidal energy is being held back by a complex web of bureaucratic red tape, outdated regulations, and a lack of investment.

Let’s face it: tidal energy is not exactly a new concept. In fact, the first commercial tidal power plant was opened in France back in 1966. So, what’s taken so long? The answer lies in the regulatory hurdles that have been erected around the industry. In the UK, for example, the government’s own tidal energy strategy has been on ice since 2015, despite a promise to launch it in 2016. In the US, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is still struggling to finalize its own rules for tidal energy development, eight years after the first lease was issued.

Meanwhile, other forms of renewable energy, like solar and wind, have been able to bypass these regulatory challenges and scale up rapidly. Why is tidal energy being left behind? The answer lies in the unique challenges of harnessing the power of the tides. Unlike solar and wind energy, which can be deployed in a relatively straightforward way, tidal energy requires a complex system of turbines, moorings, and transmission infrastructure. This complexity makes it harder to predict and control, which in turn makes it harder to get regulatory approval.

But it’s not just the regulatory environment that’s holding tidal energy back. The industry is also plagued by a lack of investment. According to a report by BloombergNEF, tidal energy received just $150 million in investment last year, compared to $15 billion for solar and wind. This lack of investment is partly due to the fact that tidal energy is still a relatively small industry, but it’s also due to the fact that investors are cautious about putting their money into a sector that’s still struggling to prove itself.

So what’s the solution? Firstly, governments need to simplify and streamline the regulatory process for tidal energy. This means creating clear, consistent rules that allow developers to build and deploy tidal energy systems with minimal bureaucracy. Secondly, investors need to be willing to take a chance on tidal energy. This means being willing to invest in a sector that’s still in its early days, and being patient as the industry scales up.

Finally, the industry needs to focus on innovation and R&D. This means investing in new technologies that can make tidal energy more efficient, more reliable, and more cost-effective. By doing so, we can unlock the full potential of tidal energy and create a new, sustainable source of power that can help us meet our climate goals.

It’s time to rethink our assumptions about tidal energy and the challenges it faces. By doing so, we can unlock a new era of sustainable power and create a brighter future for our planet.
