The Unsung Hero of Renewable Energy: Why Pumped Hydro Storage is the Key to a Sustainable Future (But Nobody’s Talking About It)

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Unsung Hero of Renewable Energy: Why Pumped Hydro Storage is the Key to a Sustainable Future (But Nobody’s Talking About It)

As the world transitions to renewable energy sources, a behemoth of a technology has been quietly pumping away in the background, providing a reliable and efficient way to store excess energy for when it’s needed most. But despite its crucial role in the fight against climate change, pumped hydro storage (PHS) remains a mystery to many. It’s time to shine a light on this unsung hero and explore why it’s the key to a sustainable future, yet nobody’s talking about it.

For years, battery storage has gotten most of the attention when it comes to renewable energy. And for good reason – lithium-ion batteries have made huge strides in recent years, becoming increasingly affordable and efficient. But battery storage has its limitations. It’s expensive, it’s not very long-lasting, and it can’t store anywhere near the amount of energy that PHS can.

So, what is pumped hydro storage, exactly? Simply put, it’s a system that uses excess energy to pump water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir, creating a massive amount of potential energy that can be released as needed to generate electricity. It’s a tried-and-true technology that’s been around for decades, but it’s only recently started to get the attention it deserves.

One of the main reasons PHS is so effective is that it can store a massive amount of energy – up to several gigawatt-hours. To put that in perspective, that’s enough energy to power a small city for days. And because it uses existing infrastructure, the cost of building a PHS system is relatively low compared to other forms of energy storage.

But PHS isn’t just about scale – it’s also about reliability. Unlike batteries, which can degrade over time, PHS systems can last for decades with minimal maintenance. And because they use water, they’re virtually immune to the same kind of natural disasters that can damage or destroy battery storage facilities.

So, why haven’t we heard more about PHS? One reason is that it’s often overlooked in favor of newer, sexier technologies. But the truth is, PHS has been around for so long that it’s become invisible – people assume it’s old news, and therefore not worth talking about.

But the reality is, PHS is more important than ever. As the world shifts towards renewable energy, the need for reliable and efficient energy storage is only going to grow. And PHS is perfectly positioned to fill that gap.

In fact, some experts believe that PHS could be the key to unlocking a 100% renewable energy grid. With the right infrastructure in place, PHS could provide a stable and reliable source of energy that can match the output of traditional power plants.

Of course, there are challenges to overcome – finding suitable locations for PHS systems, for example, and dealing with the environmental impact of large-scale water diversion. But the benefits of PHS far outweigh the costs. And as the world moves towards a more sustainable future, it’s time to give this unsung hero the recognition it deserves.

So, the next time you hear someone talking about the future of renewable energy, make sure to bring up PHS. It may not be the flashiest technology out there, but it’s the one that’s been quietly doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes, keeping the lights on and the planet cool.
