The Unfinished Business of Climate Salvation: What’s the Real Progress on the World’s Most Critical Treaty?

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Andrew Garfield No Comments on The Unfinished Business of Climate Salvation: What’s the Real Progress on the World’s Most Critical Treaty?

As the world teeters on the edge of catastrophic climate change, a question echoes in the minds of environmentalists, scientists, and world leaders alike: Can we really save ourselves? The Paris Agreement, also known as the Paris Climate Treaty, was meant to be the game-changer, the turning point in humanity’s relationship with the planet. But four years on, have we made enough progress to prevent the worst-case scenario? The answer is far from clear-cut.

On the surface, the Paris Agreement appears to be a resounding success. Nearly 200 countries have committed to limiting global warming to well below 2°C (3.6°F) above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C (2.7°F). The agreement has also established a framework for countries to report on their greenhouse gas emissions and climate finance. But scratch beneath the surface, and the reality is far more nuanced.

One of the biggest challenges is the lack of ambition in countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which outline their plans to reduce emissions. Current NDCs would lead to a 3°C (5.4°F) rise in global temperatures, exceeding the 1.5°C target. Moreover, the NDCs are not binding, and countries are not held accountable for their climate actions.

Another major hurdle is the issue of climate finance. Developing countries, which are often the most vulnerable to climate change, are struggling to access the $100 billion per year in climate finance pledged by developed countries. The lack of funding hinders their ability to transition to renewable energy, adapt to climate impacts, and build climate resilience.

Despite these challenges, there are signs of progress. The European Union, for example, has set an ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. China, the world’s largest emitter, has made significant strides in renewable energy, with solar and wind power accounting for over 20% of its electricity generation. India, another major emitter, has set an ambitious target of reaching 40% of its electricity from non-fossil fuels by 2030.

However, even these successes are not without their own set of challenges. The EU’s carbon neutrality goal, for instance, relies heavily on carbon capture and storage technology, which is still in its infancy. China’s renewable energy boom has been driven by state-led investments, but the country still has a long way to go in terms of reducing its overall emissions.

In the end, the question of whether we can save ourselves from climate change depends on the collective efforts of governments, corporations, and individuals around the world. It’s a daunting task, but one that requires immediate action and a willingness to innovate and adapt. As we look to the future, it’s clear that the Paris Agreement is just the beginning of a long and difficult journey towards climate salvation. The real question is: are we up for the challenge?
