The Net-Zero Emissions Fantasy: Why Our Climate Goals are Doomed to Fail

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Net-Zero Emissions Fantasy: Why Our Climate Goals are Doomed to Fail

As we approach the mid-point of the decade, the world is still reeling from the devastating consequences of climate change. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and melting glaciers have become the new norm. But despite the urgency of the situation, the holy grail of climate policy – net-zero emissions – remains an elusive dream. In fact, I’d argue that our current approach to achieving net-zero emissions is not only doomed to fail, but it’s also a distraction from the real problem: our addiction to growth and consumption.

Let’s face it, net-zero emissions is a simplistic solution to a complex problem. It’s a reductionist approach that focuses on the easy stuff – like increasing renewable energy production and reducing energy consumption – while ignoring the elephant in the room: the sheer scale of global economic activity. We’re talking about a world where the production and consumption of goods and services have grown exponentially over the past few decades, driven by the insatiable demands of capitalism. And yet, we expect to somehow magically decouple economic growth from emissions growth? It’s like trying to square the circle.

The truth is, most net-zero emissions scenarios rely on unproven technologies, geoengineering, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) – a fantasy solution that’s more science fiction than science fact. Even if these technologies were to become commercially viable, they would only delay, not prevent, the catastrophic consequences of climate change. The real challenge is not just reducing emissions, but reducing the underlying drivers of emissions: our consumption patterns, our economic systems, and our values.

So, what’s the alternative? For starters, we need to rethink our relationship with growth and consumption. We need to recognize that economic growth is not the same as human well-being, and that there are limits to the resources we can extract and consume without causing irreparable harm to the planet. This means embracing a new economic paradigm that prioritizes people and the planet over profits and GDP. It means implementing policies that promote sustainable agriculture, circular economy practices, and social justice.

It also means having a more nuanced conversation about what net-zero emissions really means. Is it just about reducing our carbon footprint, or is it about creating a more equitable and sustainable world? Can we really achieve net-zero emissions without addressing the systemic inequalities that perpetuate poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation?

The answer, of course, is no. Net-zero emissions is just the beginning – a necessary but insufficient condition for a sustainable future. What we really need is a fundamental transformation of our societies, our economies, and our values. We need to recognize that the climate crisis is not just an environmental problem, but a social and economic one. And we need to take bold action to address it – not just through techno-fixes and carbon pricing, but through systemic change, social justice, and a new vision for human flourishing.

So, let’s not get distracted by the fantasy of net-zero emissions. Let’s focus on the real challenge: creating a world that’s not just carbon-neutral, but just, equitable, and sustainable for all – a world that puts people and the planet at the center of our economic and social systems. That’s the only way we’ll truly achieve a net-zero emissions future – and create a world that’s worth living in.
