The International Community’s Climate Change Efforts Are More Effective Than You Think

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The International Community’s Climate Change Efforts Are More Effective Than You Think

As the world grapples with the existential threat of climate change, it’s easy to get caught up in the sense of hopelessness that seems to permeate every discussion on the topic. We’re constantly reminded of the devastating consequences of inaction, from rising sea levels to intense natural disasters. And yet, despite the dire predictions, international agreements on climate change have been making significant strides in recent years.

One of the most commonly cited failures of the international community is the Kyoto Protocol, which was signed in 1997 and aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5% below 1990 levels. The agreement was widely criticized for its lack of binding commitments from major emitters like the United States, and its failure to include developing countries in its emissions reductions targets.

However, what’s often overlooked is that the Kyoto Protocol laid the groundwork for subsequent agreements, including the Paris Agreement, which was adopted in 2015 and set a global goal of limiting warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The Paris Agreement has been hailed as a major breakthrough, with nearly 200 countries committing to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and cooperate on climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

But what’s even more remarkable is the progress that’s been made on the implementation side. Take, for example, the European Union’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% below 1990 levels by 2030. The EU has already made significant strides in this direction, with emissions declining by over 20% since 1990. Similarly, countries like Norway and Sweden have made significant investments in renewable energy, with Norway aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030 and Sweden already achieving this goal in 2019.

Another often-overlooked aspect of international climate agreements is the importance of cooperation and knowledge sharing. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has established a number of programs and initiatives aimed at supporting developing countries in their efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. For example, the UNFCCC’s Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) brings together governments, NGOs, and private sector companies to share knowledge and best practices on reducing short-lived climate pollutants like methane and black carbon.

Of course, there’s still much work to be done. The pace of progress on climate change is glacial, and there are still many countries that are not taking the issue seriously enough. But by examining the successes of international climate agreements, we can gain a more nuanced understanding of the complex challenges involved and the ways in which the global community is working together to address them.

In short, while the fight against climate change is far from over, the international community’s efforts are more effective than you might think. By building on the progress made so far and continuing to cooperate and innovate, we can create a more sustainable future for all.
