As the world continues to shift towards renewable energy, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of solar panels and wind turbines. But beneath the surface, the industry is facing a crisis of its own making. And it’s high time someone shone a light on the dirty truth.

I’m not talking about the environmental impact of renewable energy, although that’s a topic in itself. I’m talking about the industry’s crippling lack of transparency, its propensity for greenwashing, and its utter failure to deliver on its own promises.
In recent years, I’ve been hooked on listening to renewable energy podcasts. I’ve devoured episodes from the likes of Energy Transition Show, The Energy Podcast, and Renewable Energy World. And let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. But as I dug deeper, I started to notice some disturbing trends.

Firstly, there’s the issue of greenwashing. It’s a plague that affects not just the renewable energy industry, but the entire sustainability space. Companies are quick to slap a “renewable” label on their products or services, without actually doing the hard work of reducing their carbon footprint.
Take, for example, the infamous “carbon offset” industry. It’s a multi-billion dollar market that promises to balance out our emissions by investing in renewable energy projects elsewhere. But the reality is far more complicated. Many of these projects are nothing more than a way for companies to buy their way out of accountability.
And then there’s the issue of transparency. The renewable energy industry is notorious for its lack of open data and communication. It’s like they’re hiding something. When I asked for information on a specific project, I was met with a wall of silence. No one wants to talk about the nitty-gritty details of how their energy is being produced.
But perhaps the biggest issue of all is the industry’s failure to deliver on its own promises. We’re constantly told that renewable energy is the future, that it’s going to save us from climate change. But the reality is that we’re not making near enough progress.
Last year, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that the world’s energy supply was still 60% reliant on fossil fuels. Sixty percent! Meanwhile, the renewable energy industry is still struggling to get its act together.
So, what’s going on? Why can’t we seem to get this right? As someone who’s passionate about renewable energy, it’s disheartening to see the industry fail to live up to its own hype.
But here’s the thing: I’m not giving up. I still believe in the power of renewable energy to transform our world. I just think we need to have a more honest conversation about what’s really going on.
That’s why I’ve started my own renewable energy podcast, The Energy Insider. It’s a show that’s all about cutting through the noise, getting to the heart of the issues, and shining a light on the real stories behind the headlines.
Join me on this journey as we explore the complex, messy world of renewable energy. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
