The Dark Side of Community Solar: How Big Businesses Are Hijacking the Effort to Make Renewable Energy Accessible to All

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Dark Side of Community Solar: How Big Businesses Are Hijacking the Effort to Make Renewable Energy Accessible to All

Community solar projects, touted as the solution to making renewable energy accessible to low-income households and underserved communities, are facing a daunting issue: corporate takeover. It’s a reality that’s been brewing for years, but has only recently come to light. While community solar projects were initially designed to empower local residents to invest in clean energy, the industry has been quietly dominated by large corporations, leaving behind the very people it was meant to serve.

The concept of community solar is straightforward: a group of individuals or organizations pool their resources to invest in a shared solar array, allowing each member to receive a portion of the energy generated. This model has been hailed as a game-changer for low-income households, who often lack access to solar energy due to high upfront costs. However, as the industry has grown, so have the financial interests of large corporations, leading to a worrying trend of community solar projects being hijacked by these entities.

Take, for example, the case of Community Solar, Inc., a solar developer that has acquired numerous community solar projects across the United States. While the company boasts that its projects have benefited thousands of households, critics argue that its business model is designed to maximize profits, not community benefit. By using complex financial structures and opaque contracts, Community Solar has been able to extract significant revenue from its projects, leaving behind the original community investors.

This is not an isolated incident. Other large corporations, such as Sunrun and Vivint, have also been accused of exploiting community solar projects for their own gain. By using aggressive marketing tactics and high-pressure sales techniques, these companies have convinced many community investors to sign contracts that ultimately benefit the corporation, not the community.

The consequences of this phenomenon are far-reaching. Community solar projects, once seen as a beacon of hope for renewable energy accessibility, are now being hijacked by corporate interests. The very people who were meant to benefit from these projects are being left behind, and the environment is paying the price. As the demand for clean energy continues to grow, it’s essential to address the elephant in the room: the corporate takeover of community solar.

So, what can be done to reclaim community solar for the people? One solution is to promote community-led models of solar development, where local residents have a say in the decision-making process and a stake in the financial benefits. This approach has been successfully implemented in numerous communities, where residents have come together to develop and manage their own solar projects.

Another solution is to strengthen regulations and oversight, to prevent corporate interests from exploiting community solar projects. This can be achieved through stricter contract requirements, clearer financial transparency, and more robust community engagement mechanisms.

In conclusion, the community solar industry is at a crossroads. Will it continue down the path of corporate dominance, or will it be reclaimed by the people it was meant to serve? The choice is ours. As the demand for renewable energy continues to grow, it’s up to us to ensure that community solar projects are developed with equity, justice, and community benefit in mind. Anything less would be a betrayal of the very spirit of community solar itself.
