The Cost of Renewable Energy is a Myth: We’ve Been Deceived into Thinking it’s Expensive

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Cost of Renewable Energy is a Myth: We’ve Been Deceived into Thinking it’s Expensive

For decades, we’ve been conditioned to believe that renewable energy is a luxury only the affluent can afford. The notion that solar panels and wind turbines are prohibitively expensive has been perpetuated by the fossil fuel industry, policymakers, and even some so-called environmentalists. However, the truth is far from it. The cost of renewable energy has been plummeting over the years, making it an increasingly viable option for individuals, businesses, and governments worldwide.

A study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) found that the cost of solar electricity has fallen by over 70% in the last decade, making it more competitive with fossil fuels than ever before. Similarly, the cost of wind energy has dropped by over 60% in the same period. These decreases are largely due to advancements in technology, economies of scale, and the increasing demand for renewable energy.

Despite these improvements, many people still believe that the cost of renewable energy is too high. They point to the upfront costs of installing solar panels or wind turbines, but fail to consider the long-term benefits. For instance, a study by BloombergNEF found that solar energy is now cheaper than coal or gas in over 80% of the world’s countries. Furthermore, renewable energy can provide energy independence, reduce reliance on foreign oil, and create jobs in the clean energy sector.

Another aspect that is often overlooked is the rapidly decreasing cost of energy storage, which is crucial for widespread adoption of renewable energy. As the cost of batteries continues to fall, the ability to store excess energy generated by solar panels or wind turbines becomes more feasible, making the grid more stable and efficient.

Some might argue that the intermittency of renewable energy sources is a major drawback, but this myth has been largely debunked. While it’s true that solar and wind energy are not always available, advancements in forecasting and grid management have made it possible to integrate these sources into the grid with minimal disruption.

So, what’s behind this persistent myth that renewable energy is expensive? It’s largely a matter of vested interests. The fossil fuel industry has a significant stake in maintaining the status quo, and they’ve invested heavily in lobbying and disinformation campaigns to discredit renewable energy. Additionally, some policymakers have been slow to adopt policies that support the transition to renewable energy, often citing cost concerns as a reason.

It’s time to challenge this narrative and recognize the reality: the cost of renewable energy is rapidly decreasing, making it an increasingly viable option for everyone. As the world continues to transition towards a low-carbon economy, it’s essential to have an accurate understanding of the cost of renewable energy and its benefits. The future of our planet depends on it.
