The Circular Economy is a Recipe for Disaster

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Circular Economy is a Recipe for Disaster

As the world grapples with the existential threat of climate change, the buzzword on everyone’s lips is the circular economy. It’s hailed as the silver bullet that will save us from ourselves, transforming the way we produce, consume, and waste. But is this utopian vision really the solution we’re looking for? Or is it a convenient distraction from the real issues at hand?

The circular economy, in theory, sounds wonderful. It’s about designing out waste, keeping resources in use for as long as possible, and recovering and regenerating materials at the end of their service life. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? But scratch beneath the surface, and the reality is far more complicated.

Take, for instance, the concept of closed-loop production. This is where products are designed to be recycled, reused, or biodegradable, with minimal waste generation. Sounds great, but what about the materials used in production? What about the energy required to recycle and process these materials? The truth is, the production and processing of materials for circular production often generates more emissions and waste than traditional production methods.

Another issue is the notion that the circular economy is a panacea for all our environmental woes. Some proponents claim that by adopting circular practices, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50% and create new jobs in the process. But a closer look at the evidence reveals that the benefits are often overstated. A study by the University of Cambridge found that the circular economy can only reduce emissions by around 10-20% in the best-case scenario.

And then there’s the elephant in the room: the role of consumption. The circular economy is often touted as a way to reduce waste, but it’s also heavily reliant on the continued consumption of products. We’re still buying, still using, and still discarding. The difference is that we’re doing it in a more “sustainable” way. But what about the underlying drivers of consumption? What about the social and cultural pressures that lead us to buy more, not less?

So what’s going on here? Why do we keep peddling the circular economy as a silver bullet when it’s not delivering the promised benefits? One reason is that it’s a convenient way to avoid more fundamental questions about our relationship with the natural world. We’re still operating on the assumption that economic growth is the ultimate goal, and that the circular economy is just a way to make that growth more sustainable.

But what if the real problem isn’t the way we produce and consume, but the way we think about growth itself? What if the circular economy is just a Band-Aid on a deeper wound? It’s time to rethink our assumptions about what we mean by “sustainable” and to challenge the status quo. The circular economy might have its benefits, but it’s not the solution we need.
