“Tapping into the Tides: The Hidden Potential of Ocean Current Energy”

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Tom Clansy No Comments on “Tapping into the Tides: The Hidden Potential of Ocean Current Energy”

In a world where renewable energy sources are becoming increasingly crucial, a staggering statistic has emerged: the global ocean current energy market is expected to reach $83.9 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 21.3% from 2020 to 2027. That’s right – ocean current energy, a relatively unknown player in the renewable energy sector, is set to become a major player in the next few years.

But what exactly is ocean current energy, and why is it gaining so much traction? Simply put, ocean current energy harnesses the kinetic energy of ocean currents to generate electricity. These currents are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the world’s oceans, which creates powerful flows of water that can be tapped into. The result is a clean, reliable, and virtually limitless source of energy.

One of the most exciting aspects of ocean current energy is its potential to power entire coastal communities. Imagine a world where the powerful currents off the coast of Hawaii or Scotland are harnessed to generate electricity for homes, businesses, and industries. It’s a prospect that’s not only environmentally friendly but also economically viable.

So, how does it work? Ocean current energy technologies typically involve underwater turbines or buoys that capture the kinetic energy of the currents and convert it into electricity. These devices can be deployed in various locations, from shallow coastal waters to deeper ocean currents, and can be designed to operate in a range of conditions.

One company, Ocean Energy Council, is already leading the charge in ocean current energy development. Their flagship project, the Maelstrom tidal energy project, aims to deploy a 100-megawatt tidal array off the coast of Maine, USA. This project has the potential to power over 75,000 homes and demonstrates the scalability of ocean current energy.

However, there are also challenges to overcome. One major hurdle is the high upfront cost of deploying ocean current energy technologies. The cost of installing and maintaining these devices can be prohibitively expensive, making it difficult for companies to break even. Additionally, there are concerns about the environmental impact of these devices, particularly on marine life.

Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of ocean current energy are too great to ignore. As the world continues to transition away from fossil fuels, ocean current energy could play a crucial role in meeting our energy needs. It’s time to tap into the tides and unlock the hidden potential of ocean current energy.
