Smart Grids Are the Least of Our Concerns: Here’s Why

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Smart Grids Are the Least of Our Concerns: Here’s Why

As we continue to navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing energy landscape, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype surrounding smart grids. We’re constantly being told that these innovative systems are the key to a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient energy future. But what if I told you that smart grids are actually the least of our concerns?

Don’t get me wrong, smart grids are a crucial component of our energy infrastructure, and they do offer a range of benefits when it comes to managing energy supply and demand. However, in my opinion, the focus on smart grids has distracted us from the more pressing issue of grid resilience. In other words, while smart grids can help us manage energy more effectively, they may not necessarily make our grids more resilient to the threats we’re seeing today.

One of the biggest challenges facing our energy grid is the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events. From hurricanes to wildfires, these events are causing widespread damage to our grid infrastructure, leaving millions of people without power. And yet, despite these risks, our grid remains woefully unprepared to withstand the impact of these events.

So, what’s the problem? The issue lies in the fact that our grid was designed for a different era – one in which weather was less extreme and the risks were more predictable. Our grid was built to withstand the occasional thunderstorm or heatwave, but it wasn’t designed to handle the kind of catastrophic events we’re seeing today.

In this sense, smart grids are not the solution to our grid resilience problem. In fact, they may even make things worse. By integrating more advanced technologies into our grid, we’re creating a system that’s highly dependent on complex software and digital infrastructure. And when that infrastructure fails – as it inevitably will – we’re left with a grid that’s even more vulnerable to disruption.

So, what can we do instead? The answer lies in building a more resilient grid – one that’s designed to withstand the impacts of extreme weather and other forms of disruption. This requires a fundamental shift in the way we think about our grid, moving away from a focus on efficiency and cost savings and towards a focus on resilience and reliability.

One approach to building a more resilient grid is to incorporate more distributed energy resources, such as solar and wind power, into our energy mix. By spreading out our energy generation across a wider area, we can reduce the risk of widespread power outages and create a more robust and adaptable grid.

Another approach is to invest in grid hardening – the practice of strengthening our grid infrastructure to withstand the impacts of extreme weather and other forms of disruption. This can involve everything from upgrading transmission lines and substations to installing smart grid technologies that can detect and respond to grid disturbances in real-time.

Ultimately, the key to building a more resilient grid is to take a more holistic approach to energy planning – one that considers the complex interplay between technology, infrastructure, and the natural environment. By doing so, we can create a grid that’s better equipped to handle the challenges of the 21st century – and one that’s more secure, reliable, and sustainable for generations to come.
