“Shining a Light on Local Solar Programs: Why Your Town Should Be Generating More Renewable Energy”

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Tom Clansy No Comments on “Shining a Light on Local Solar Programs: Why Your Town Should Be Generating More Renewable Energy”

Did you know that in 2020, just 3% of U.S. electricity came from solar energy, despite the fact that the cost of solar panels has plummeted by over 70% in the last decade? It’s shocking to think that with the technology and affordability we have today, we’re still relying so heavily on fossil fuels to power our homes and businesses. But there’s a growing movement across the country to change that, and it starts at the local level.

Enter local solar programs, initiatives that aim to make it easier and more affordable for individuals and businesses to install solar panels and generate their own renewable energy. From community solar gardens to net metering incentives, these programs are popping up in towns and cities all over the country, and they’re having a real impact.

One of the most exciting things about local solar programs is that they’re often tailored to the specific needs and goals of the community. For example, some cities are offering discounts or rebates to residents who install solar panels, while others are creating community solar gardens that allow multiple households to share the benefits of solar energy. Some towns are even creating “solar cooperatives” where residents can pool their resources to install a large-scale solar array that benefits everyone in the community.

But local solar programs aren’t just about reducing our reliance on fossil fuels – they’re also about creating local jobs and stimulating economic growth. According to a study by the Solar Energy Industries Association, the solar industry already supports over 240,000 jobs in the United States, and that number is expected to triple by 2025. By investing in local solar programs, cities and towns can help create a thriving clean energy economy that benefits everyone.

Of course, there are still challenges to overcome. One of the biggest hurdles facing local solar programs is the issue of interconnection – the process of connecting a solar panel system to the grid and getting paid for the excess energy it produces. This can be a complex and time-consuming process, and it’s often a major barrier for small-scale solar installations.

But there are solutions on the horizon. Many states are working to simplify the interconnection process and make it easier for homeowners and businesses to install solar panels. Some companies are even developing new technologies that allow for “plug-and-play” solar systems, eliminating the need for complex wiring and permits.

As we move forward into a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, local solar programs will play a critical role. By investing in these initiatives, we can create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. And with the technology and affordability we have today, there’s no reason why we can’t make a big impact – starting right in our own backyard.

So what can you do to get involved? Start by talking to your local government or utility company about the solar programs available in your area. You can also look into community solar gardens or solar cooperatives in your community. And if you’re feeling ambitious, you can even start your own solar initiative – whether it’s a small-scale installation on your own home or a large-scale project that benefits the entire community.

The future of energy is bright, and it’s up to us to shine a light on the opportunities available in our own backyards.
