Shining a Light on Local Solar Programs: How Cities Are Leading the Charge to Renewable Energy

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Tom Clansy No Comments on Shining a Light on Local Solar Programs: How Cities Are Leading the Charge to Renewable Energy

Did you know that in 2020, just 3.4% of the United States’ energy came from solar power? While it may seem like a small percentage, it’s a remarkable increase from just 0.2% in 2008. But what’s driving this growth? One key factor is the proliferation of local solar programs, which are allowing cities to take control of their own energy futures.

These programs are popping up all over the country, from Portland, Maine to San Diego, California, and they’re not just about installing solar panels on rooftops. They’re about creating a community-driven approach to renewable energy, one that empowers local residents, businesses, and governments to work together to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.

One such program is the Solarize NYC initiative, launched in 2012 by the City of New York. The goal was to make solar energy more accessible and affordable for city residents, particularly in low-income communities. The program was a resounding success, with over 4,000 installations and a total savings of $150 million for participants.

Another example is the City of Austin’s Community Solar Program, which allows residents to purchase or lease a share of a larger solar array. This not only makes solar energy more affordable but also helps to spread the benefits of renewable energy to low-income households.

So, what makes these programs so successful? For one, they often involve partnerships between local government, community organizations, and private companies. This collaborative approach helps to pool resources, expertise, and resources, making it possible to overcome the usual barriers to solar adoption, such as high upfront costs and regulatory hurdles.

Additionally, local solar programs often provide education and outreach to community members, helping to raise awareness about the benefits of solar energy and demystify the installation process. This can be especially important in low-income or minority communities, where access to information and resources may be limited.

Of course, local solar programs are not without their challenges. One of the biggest hurdles is often the local permitting process, which can be slow and bureaucratic. Additionally, some cities may face resistance from residents or businesses who are skeptical about the benefits of solar energy.

Despite these challenges, the momentum behind local solar programs is building. In 2020, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) reported that community solar programs are now available in 40 states, up from just 10 in 2015. This growth is expected to continue, as cities and states increasingly recognize the benefits of renewable energy for their economies, public health, and environment.

As we look to the future, it’s clear that local solar programs will play a critical role in shaping the way we generate and consume energy. By empowering communities to take control of their own energy futures, these programs are helping to create a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient energy system for all.
