As I stood on the outskirts of a small village in rural Morocco, I watched in awe as a group of women tended to a field of rows and rows of shiny, curved mirrors. These were no ordinary mirrors – they were part of a revolutionary solar thermal technology that was transforming the lives of the villagers. The system, known as a concentrated solar power (CSP) system, was harnessing the intense desert sun to heat water for cooking, bathing, and even generating electricity. It was a stark contrast to the days when the villagers relied on charcoal and firewood for their energy needs, contributing to deforestation and air pollution.

The women I met, Fatima and Amira, were part of a community-led initiative to install solar thermal systems in their village. In Morocco, where I witnessed the impact of solar thermal technology firsthand, the government has set ambitious targets to increase the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix. Solar thermal technology is likely to play a significant part in achieving these targets, providing energy for millions of people and contributing to the country’s economic growth.

As I left the village, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of optimism about the potential of solar thermal technology. It’s a technology that has the power to transform lives, communities, and the planet. And as Fatima and Amira’s story shows, it’s not just about the technology itself – it’s about the people and the communities that benefit from it.
