Hydroelectric Power: The Renewable Energy Source That’s Not as Green as You Think

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Hydroelectric Power: The Renewable Energy Source That’s Not as Green as You Think

As the world increasingly turns to renewable energy sources to combat climate change, hydroelectric power is often touted as a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. But is it really? On closer inspection, the truth is more complicated than the typical greenwashing we’ve been fed.

Hydroelectric power, which generates electricity by harnessing the energy of moving water, is often considered one of the cleanest forms of energy. After all, it’s just water flowing through a dam, right? Wrong. The reality is that hydroelectric power plants can have devastating environmental impacts, from disrupting natural water flows and altering ecosystems to displacing entire communities.

Take, for example, the Three Gorges Dam in China, one of the largest hydroelectric dams in the world. Completed in 2012, the dam displaced over a million people and flooded a 374-mile stretch of the Yangtze River, causing widespread environmental degradation. The dam also suffers from chronic siltation, which reduces its efficiency and generates massive amounts of toxic waste.

And it’s not just the environmental costs that are a concern. Hydroelectric power plants can also be incredibly expensive to build and maintain, often requiring massive infrastructure investments that can be prohibitively costly for many developing countries. This has led some experts to argue that hydroelectric power is not as viable a solution for energy poverty as once thought.

But before we dismiss hydroelectric power altogether, it’s worth noting that not all hydroelectric power plants are created equal. Small, run-of-river hydroelectric power plants, which harness energy from smaller, more natural water flows, can be a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative. These plants are often built in remote areas where they can have a relatively small impact on the environment, and they can provide power to local communities without displacing large numbers of people.

So what’s the way forward for hydroelectric power? Rather than promoting large-scale dams that can have devastating environmental impacts, we should be investing in smaller, more decentralized hydroelectric power plants that prioritize sustainability and community engagement. This might involve using advanced technologies, such as tidal or wave power, to harness energy from the ocean, or leveraging innovative financing models to make small-scale hydroelectric power more accessible to communities in developing countries.

The bottom line is that hydroelectric power is not a simple solution to our energy woes. It requires careful consideration of its environmental and social impacts, as well as a commitment to innovation and community engagement. By taking a more nuanced approach to hydroelectric power, we can harness its potential while minimizing its drawbacks and creating a more sustainable energy future for all.
