“From Crisis to Coalition: The Unlikely Progress of the Climate Agreement”

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Amanda White No Comments on “From Crisis to Coalition: The Unlikely Progress of the Climate Agreement”

As I stood on the shores of the Maldives, watching the sunrise over the turquoise waters, I couldn’t help but think about the devastating impact of climate change on this tiny island nation. The memories of my childhood friend, Ahmed, a young fisherman who had lost his livelihood to the rising tides and sea-level rise, still lingered in my mind. His community was no stranger to the challenges posed by climate change, but they were determined to fight back – and their story is a testament to the power of international cooperation.

The Maldives, a nation of 1,200 coral islands, was on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Rising sea levels threatened to submerge their very existence, and the government knew they needed to act fast. But, as a small island nation, they couldn’t do it alone. That’s when they turned to the international community, joining the Paris Agreement in 2016, a landmark climate deal that aimed to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius.

Fast-forward to today, and the progress made under the Paris Agreement is nothing short of remarkable. The agreement has brought together nearly 200 countries, representing over 95% of global greenhouse gas emissions, to work towards a common goal: a climate-resilient future. The agreement’s core principle, “country-driven and party-led,” has fostered a sense of ownership and cooperation, encouraging countries to set their own climate goals and work together to achieve them.

One of the most significant achievements of the Paris Agreement is the increase in countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). NDCs are countries’ plans to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Since the agreement was signed, over 190 countries have submitted their NDCs, with many setting ambitious targets to reduce their emissions. The European Union, for example, has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.

But, progress isn’t just about numbers; it’s also about people. The Paris Agreement has spawned a global movement of citizens, civil society organizations, and businesses working together to accelerate climate action. The climate strikes led by Greta Thunberg and millions of young people around the world have put the issue of climate change at the forefront of international discourse.

The agreement’s impact can also be seen in the growth of renewable energy. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable energy accounted for 36% of global power generation in 2020, up from 22% in 2010. This shift towards cleaner energy sources is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the worst impacts of climate change.

Of course, there’s still much work to be done. The Paris Agreement’s goals are ambitious, but the pace of progress is slower than needed. The world is still on track to miss the 1.5-degree Celsius target, and the consequences of inaction will be dire.

Yet, as I stood on those sun-kissed shores, I saw hope. The Maldives, a tiny island nation, had become a beacon of resilience and determination. Ahmed’s community, though facing incredible challenges, was fighting back – and the world was taking notice.

The progress made under the Paris Agreement is a testament to the power of international cooperation and the collective will to act on climate change. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the climate crisis, it’s clear that the journey ahead will be long and difficult. But, with the Paris Agreement as a guiding force, we can draw strength from the progress we’ve made and strive towards a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
