Can the World’s Most Ambitious Climate Conference Yet Deliver on Its Promises?

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Andrew Garfield No Comments on Can the World’s Most Ambitious Climate Conference Yet Deliver on Its Promises?

As the world grapples with the existential threat of climate change, the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP31) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, is poised to be the most pivotal gathering yet. With the global temperature already 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels, and the window for limiting warming to 1.5°C rapidly closing, the pressure is on for world leaders to deliver on their climate commitments. But what exactly does the world expect from COP31, and can the conference’s initiatives restore hope for a livable future?

COP31, also known as the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), promises to be a groundbreaking event. The Egyptian presidency has vowed to make COP31 a “Conference of Action,” with a focus on implementing the Paris Agreement and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. But can the conference’s promised initiatives make a dent in the climate crisis?

One of the key areas of focus at COP31 is the implementation of the “Global Stocktake,” a process aimed at reviewing countries’ progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing their climate resilience. The Global Stocktake is a critical component of the Paris Agreement, as it will help identify areas where countries need to step up their efforts and provide a framework for holding them accountable. But with many countries still lagging behind on their climate commitments, can the Global Stocktake deliver on its promise of a more transparent and accountable climate governance system?

Another key area of focus at COP31 is the development of new climate finance mechanisms. The Paris Agreement called for developed countries to mobilize $100 billion per year in climate finance for developing countries by 2020. However, this goal has yet to be met, and many developing countries are still struggling to access the funding they need to transition to a low-carbon economy. Can COP31’s initiatives on climate finance, such as the proposed “Loss and Damage” fund, help bridge the gap between the funding needs of developing countries and the resources available to them?

Finally, COP31 promises to be a conference of innovation, with a focus on showcasing and scaling up climate-friendly technologies and solutions. From clean energy to sustainable agriculture, the conference will feature a range of initiatives aimed at accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. But can these innovations be scaled up quickly enough to make a meaningful impact on the climate crisis?

As the world watches with bated breath, COP31’s success will depend on its ability to deliver on its promises. Can the conference’s initiatives restore hope for a livable future, or will it fall short of expectations? Only time will tell. One thing is certain, however: the world is watching, and the stakes have never been higher.
