Can the World’s Climate Treaty Progress Catch Up with the Pace of Climate Change?

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Andrew Garfield No Comments on Can the World’s Climate Treaty Progress Catch Up with the Pace of Climate Change?

As the world continues to grapple with the devastating impacts of climate change, a pressing question looms large: can the progress being made towards a global climate treaty keep pace with the accelerating rate of environmental degradation? The answer is far from clear-cut, and the stakes have never been higher.

In recent years, there have been glimmers of hope on the climate treaty front. The Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, brought together almost 200 countries in a historic commitment to limit global warming to well below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Since then, many countries have made significant strides in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, investing in renewable energy, and promoting sustainable land use practices.

However, despite these positive developments, the pace of climate treaty progress remains woefully inadequate to tackle the scale and urgency of the crisis. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that we have just over a decade to take drastic action to limit warming to 1.5°C, and that failure to do so will have catastrophic consequences for the planet. The current trajectory of emissions reductions is nowhere near sufficient to meet this goal, and the window for action is rapidly closing.

So, what’s holding back the climate treaty progress? One major obstacle is the lack of ambition and coordination among countries. The Paris Agreement set a benchmark for countries to submit their own Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) outlining their emissions reduction targets, but these plans are often vague, inadequate, or even contradictory. Moreover, the agreement’s decision-making processes can be slow, cumbersome, and dominated by the interests of powerful nations.

Another challenge is the sheer complexity of translating climate treaty progress into tangible, on-the-ground action. From decarbonizing energy systems to protecting and restoring natural carbon sinks, the scale and scope of transformation required to meet the Paris Agreement’s goals are daunting. Moreover, the social and economic implications of these changes must be carefully managed to avoid exacerbating inequality, displacement, and conflict.

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons to believe that the climate treaty progress can accelerate. The rise of youth activism, led by movements like Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion, has injected new energy and urgency into the climate debate. Governments and corporations are increasingly recognizing the business case for climate action, and investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, clean energy, and sustainable land use.

The key to catching up with the pace of climate change lies in harnessing this momentum and leveraging it to drive more ambitious and coordinated action. This means scaling up international cooperation, mobilizing new sources of finance, and prioritizing the most vulnerable communities and ecosystems in climate policy and practice.

In the end, the question of whether the world’s climate treaty progress can catch up with the pace of climate change is not just about the science or the politics – it’s about our collective capacity for hope, resilience, and collective action. Can we rise to the challenge and create a more just, sustainable, and livable world for all? The clock is ticking, but the answer is still within our grasp.
