“Can Global Clean Energy Events Be the Turning Point in Saving Our Planet?”

Posted on May 22, 2025 By Andrew Garfield No Comments on “Can Global Clean Energy Events Be the Turning Point in Saving Our Planet?”

As I stood amidst the vibrant crowd at the recent Renewable Energy World conference in New York, I couldn’t help but wonder: Are global clean energy events the key to unlocking a sustainable future, or merely a fleeting trend? The sheer scale and enthusiasm of the event got me thinking – what if these gatherings were more than just networking opportunities or industry showcases? What if they were catalysts for real change?

It’s no secret that the world is facing an unprecedented climate crisis. Rising temperatures, devastating natural disasters, and air pollution have become the norm. Yet, despite the urgency of the situation, many countries still rely heavily on fossil fuels, and the transition to clean energy is happening at a glacial pace.

Enter global clean energy events – a flurry of conferences, trade shows, and summits that aim to bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to discuss the latest developments in renewable energy. These events are sprouting up all over the world, from the European Utility Week in Amsterdam to the Asia-Pacific Solar and Energy Storage Summit in Singapore. But are they doing enough to drive meaningful change?

The answer lies in the numbers. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix has been steadily increasing over the past decade, with solar and wind power accounting for over 30% of new power generation capacity installed in 2020. This growth is largely driven by the falling costs of renewable energy technologies, which have made them more competitive with fossil fuels.

However, there’s still a long way to go. The IEA estimates that the world needs to invest $1.7 trillion annually in clean energy infrastructure by 2030 to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This is where global clean energy events come into play. By providing a platform for industry leaders to share knowledge, showcase innovations, and forge partnerships, these events can help unlock the investments needed to drive the clean energy transition.

Take, for example, the inaugural Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) conference held in Paris in 2010. This meeting of energy ministers from over 20 countries resulted in a series of agreements aimed at accelerating the adoption of clean energy technologies. Fast forward to 2022, and CEM has become a premier platform for governments and industry leaders to collaborate on deploying clean energy solutions at scale.

Another example is the annual World Future Energy Summit (WFES) held in Abu Dhabi, which has been driving the adoption of clean energy in the Middle East and North Africa region for over a decade. The summit has attracted top leaders from industry and government, including the CEOs of major oil companies, to discuss the transition to a low-carbon economy.

So, are global clean energy events the turning point we need to save our planet? While they’re not a silver bullet, these events are an essential part of the puzzle. By bringing together the right people, at the right time, and in the right place, they can help build the momentum needed to drive the clean energy transition.

As I left the Renewable Energy World conference, I felt a sense of hope. I realized that the answer to our climate crisis lies not in a single event or technology, but in the collective action of individuals, organizations, and governments working together towards a common goal. And global clean energy events – with all their flaws and limitations – are an important part of that effort.
