The Dark Side of Renewable Energy Exhibitions: How They’re Actually Hindering the Transition to Sustainable Power

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Dark Side of Renewable Energy Exhibitions: How They’re Actually Hindering the Transition to Sustainable Power

As the world grapples with the climate crisis, the renewable energy industry has been abuzz with the latest innovations and advancements at exhibitions around the globe. But despite the excitement, I’d like to propose a contrarian view: many renewable energy exhibitions are actually doing more harm than good in the pursuit of sustainable power.

Don’t get me wrong, exhibitions like the Solar Power International (SPI) and the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) have played a crucial role in showcasing the latest technologies and connecting industry professionals. However, in their zeal to promote the latest and greatest, these events often create a culture of excess and waste that undermines the very principles of sustainability they aim to promote.

One of the most striking examples of this phenomenon is the carbon footprint of these events themselves. The SPI 2019 exhibition in Las Vegas, for instance, took place in a city that’s often criticized for its reliance on fossil fuels and lack of public transportation. Attendees and exhibitors alike were forced to fly in from around the world, generating thousands of tons of CO2 emissions in the process. And what about the energy consumption of the exhibition itself? According to estimates, a single day of SPI 2019 was equivalent to the annual energy needs of over 1,000 average American households.

But it’s not just the environmental impact that’s a concern. The emphasis on flashy, cutting-edge technologies can also create unrealistic expectations and a culture of disposability. The constant need for innovation and the pressure to stay ahead of the curve can lead to a “throwaway” mentality, where companies prioritize profit over durability and repairability. This is particularly problematic in the renewable energy sector, where the focus on rapid deployment and cost reduction can lead to a lack of consideration for the long-term maintenance and upkeep of equipment.

Furthermore, the business-as-usual approach to exhibitions can also perpetuate the dominance of large corporations and established players, marginalizing smaller, more innovative startups and community-led initiatives. The focus on high-profile keynote speakers and slick marketing campaigns can make it difficult for newcomers to get noticed, let alone connect with potential customers and partners.

So what’s the alternative? Instead of relying on large-scale, resource-intensive exhibitions, the renewable energy industry could explore more targeted, community-driven approaches to networking and knowledge-sharing. Online platforms, hackathons, and co-working spaces, for example, offer more inclusive and sustainable ways to connect people and ideas.

It’s time for the renewable energy industry to rethink its approach to exhibitions and prioritize a more nuanced, equitable, and sustainable model. By doing so, we can create a more just and resilient transition to a low-carbon economy – one that benefits everyone, not just the privileged few.
