The Cost of Renewable Energy is a Myth: Why Fossil Fuels are Still the Cheapest Option

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Dante No Comments on The Cost of Renewable Energy is a Myth: Why Fossil Fuels are Still the Cheapest Option

For years, we’ve been told that renewable energy is the way of the future, and that its cost is rapidly decreasing to the point where it’s becoming competitive with fossil fuels. But is this really the case? A closer look at the data reveals a different story.

While it’s true that the cost of renewable energy has fallen dramatically in recent years, it’s still not as cheap as fossil fuels. In fact, a study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that in 2020, the average cost of wind energy in the United States was around 2.04 cents per kilowatt-hour, while the average cost of solar energy was around 2.43 cents per kilowatt-hour. Meanwhile, the cost of natural gas, one of the cheapest and most widely used fossil fuels, was a mere 0.64 cents per kilowatt-hour.

But what about the argument that renewable energy is getting cheaper every year, and that its cost will eventually match that of fossil fuels? While it’s true that the cost of renewable energy has been falling, it’s not falling as fast as we think. According to the International Energy Agency, the cost of solar energy has fallen by around 70% over the past decade, but its cost is still around 2-3 times higher than the cost of fossil fuels. Wind energy, on the other hand, has seen a similar decline in cost, but it’s still not as cheap as natural gas.

So why is this the case? One reason is that renewable energy is often intermittent, meaning that it’s not always available when it’s needed. This requires the use of backup power sources, such as natural gas turbines, which add to the overall cost of renewable energy. Additionally, renewable energy often requires significant upfront investment in infrastructure, such as wind turbines and solar panels, which can be expensive.

Another reason why renewable energy is not as cheap as fossil fuels is that it’s often more complex and difficult to deploy. Wind turbines, for example, require careful siting and installation to ensure they’re operating at maximum efficiency, while solar panels require specialized maintenance to ensure they’re working properly. This complexity adds to the cost of renewable energy, making it even more expensive than fossil fuels.

Of course, there are many arguments in favor of renewable energy, from its environmental benefits to its potential to reduce our reliance on foreign oil. But the fact remains that, at least for now, fossil fuels are still the cheapest option when it comes to energy production.

So what does this mean for our energy future? It means that we need to be realistic about the cost of renewable energy, and not assume that it’s automatically cheaper than fossil fuels. Instead, we need to focus on developing policies and technologies that make renewable energy more competitive with fossil fuels, such as tax incentives for renewable energy production and research into new technologies that can make renewable energy more efficient.

Ultimately, the cost of renewable energy is not a myth – it’s a reality that we need to face head-on. By understanding its true cost, we can make more informed decisions about our energy future, and create a more sustainable and affordable energy system for everyone.
