The Clean Energy Revolution: Why Advocates Are Making Waves in the Industry

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Tom Clansy No Comments on The Clean Energy Revolution: Why Advocates Are Making Waves in the Industry

Did you know that in 2020, just 2% of the world’s energy came from renewable sources, despite the fact that the International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that 90% of the world’s energy needs can be met with wind, solar, and hydroelectric power? This staggering statistic highlights the urgent need for clean energy advocacy.

Clean energy advocacy is a growing movement that seeks to promote the adoption of renewable energy sources and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Advocates argue that the transition to clean energy is not only necessary for the health of our planet, but also for the economy and public health.

One of the key challenges facing clean energy advocates is the influence of the fossil fuel industry. The industry has a long history of lobbying against clean energy policies and investing in campaigns to discredit renewable energy. However, advocates are pushing back, using social media, grassroots organizing, and public policy campaigns to raise awareness and build support for clean energy.

One of the most effective tactics being used by clean energy advocates is storytelling. By sharing personal stories of individuals and communities impacted by climate change and the benefits of clean energy, advocates are able to humanize the issue and build emotional connections with policymakers and the public. For example, the Sierra Club’s “Ready for 100” campaign tells the story of cities and towns that have already made the transition to 100% renewable energy, highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of this transition.

Another key strategy being employed by clean energy advocates is pushing for policy changes at the local, state, and national level. This includes supporting initiatives such as the Green New Deal, which aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the United States by 2050. Advocates are also working to promote policies that support the development of renewable energy infrastructure, such as tax credits for solar and wind energy, and rules that allow for the integration of renewable energy into the grid.

Despite the challenges, clean energy advocates are making significant progress. For example, in 2020, the US saw a record-breaking year for solar energy, with over 15 gigawatts of new solar capacity added to the grid. Similarly, wind energy has experienced significant growth, with the US wind industry generating enough electricity to power over 25 million homes.

As the clean energy revolution continues to gain momentum, it’s clear that advocates will play a critical role in shaping the future of our energy system. By using storytelling, grassroots organizing, and policy advocacy, clean energy advocates are working to create a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all.
