Tapping into the Power of the Ocean: Can Marine Energy Solutions Save the World from Climate Change?

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Andrew Garfield No Comments on Tapping into the Power of the Ocean: Can Marine Energy Solutions Save the World from Climate Change?

As we stand at the threshold of a new decade, the world is grappling with the existential threat of climate change. Rising temperatures, melting ice caps, and extreme weather events have become the new norm, casting a shadow of uncertainty over our future. Amidst this chaos, a quiet revolution is underway – one that harnesses the untapped power of the ocean to drive a sustainable future. Marine energy solutions, once a niche concept, are now gaining mainstream attention as a potential game-changer in our fight against climate change.

The ocean, covering over 70% of our planet, is a vast and largely untapped energy source. Tides, waves, and ocean currents have the potential to generate clean energy, providing a reliable and renewable alternative to fossil fuels. The question is, can we tap into this power to make a significant dent in our carbon footprint?

One of the most promising marine energy solutions is tidal power. By harnessing the predictable rise and fall of the tides, tidal barrages or tidal stream generators can produce electricity on a massive scale. The UK’s MeyGen project, for instance, has been generating enough electricity to power over 175,000 homes since 2016. The potential for tidal power is staggering, with estimates suggesting that just 1% of the world’s tidal energy could meet global electricity demand.

Another area of innovation is the use of wave energy converters. These devices harness the kinetic energy of ocean waves to generate electricity, often using a combination of buoys, floats, and pumps to capture the power of the waves. The US-based company, Ocean Power Technologies, has been pioneering this technology, with its PowerBuoy system already in operation off the coast of Chile.

Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is another marine energy solution that’s gaining traction. By harnessing the temperature difference between the warm surface waters and cold deep waters of the ocean, OTEC systems can generate electricity, providing a reliable source of power for remote communities. Hawaii-based company, Ocean Thermal Energy Company, has been operational since 2015, providing electricity to the island of Oahu.

The challenges are real, however. Marine energy solutions face significant technical, economic, and regulatory hurdles. The cost of installation and maintenance is high, and the technology is still in its infancy. Nevertheless, the potential rewards are too great to ignore. As our world becomes increasingly dependent on renewable energy, the importance of marine energy solutions cannot be overstated.

Governments, industry leaders, and innovators are already taking notice. The European Union, for instance, has set a target of 20% of its energy coming from renewable sources by 2030, with marine energy playing a significant role in meeting this goal. The UK’s Renewable Energy Roadmap also highlights the potential for marine energy to contribute up to 10% of the country’s electricity by 2030.

As we embark on this journey towards a sustainable future, the importance of marine energy solutions cannot be overstated. By harnessing the power of the ocean, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, mitigate climate change, and create new economic opportunities. The question is, are we ready to tap into the power of the ocean and create a better future for ourselves and generations to come?
