Renewable Energy Isn’t Saving the World (Yet)

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Renewable Energy Isn’t Saving the World (Yet)

Despite the growing hype around renewable energy, the truth is that it’s not yet making a significant dent in our reliance on fossil fuels. In fact, according to a recent report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global share of renewable energy in the energy mix actually decreased in 2022, from 26% to 25%.

This might come as a surprise to many of us who have been led to believe that the shift to renewable energy is a fait accompli, a done deal. But the reality is that the transition to a low-carbon economy is proving to be far more complicated and challenging than anyone expected.

So, what’s holding us back? One major obstacle is the lack of public awareness about the importance of renewable energy. Despite the growing body of scientific evidence highlighting the devastating impacts of climate change, many people still aren’t convinced that renewable energy is the solution.

Learn more: Why International Agreements on Climate Change Matter More Than Ever

A recent survey by the Pew Research Center found that only 55% of Americans consider climate change a major threat, and an even smaller percentage (35%) believe that the government should prioritize reducing carbon emissions. This lack of public buy-in is having a chilling effect on the renewable energy industry, as investors and policymakers fail to provide the necessary support and funding.

Another major challenge is the issue of energy affordability. For many low-income households, the upfront costs of installing solar panels or investing in other forms of renewable energy are prohibitively expensive. As a result, these households are often forced to rely on fossil fuels, which are cheaper in the short term but devastating for the planet in the long run.

But there is hope. In recent years, we’ve seen a surge in innovative solar and wind technologies that have brought down the cost of renewable energy to unprecedented levels. And there are also initiatives underway to make renewable energy more accessible to low-income households, such as community solar programs that allow multiple households to share the benefits of a single solar array.

So, what can we do to raise public awareness about the importance of renewable energy? Here are a few suggestions:

* Educate ourselves and others: We need to stay informed about the latest developments in the renewable energy sector and share that knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues. This can be done through social media, podcasts, or even just conversations over coffee.

* Support policy initiatives: There are many organizations and advocacy groups working to promote renewable energy policies at the local, national, and international levels. We can support these efforts by donating time, money, or expertise.

* Invest in renewable energy: By investing in renewable energy technologies, such as solar panels or wind turbines, we can help drive down costs and make these technologies more accessible to everyone.

The shift to renewable energy is a complex and multifaceted challenge, but it’s also an opportunity for innovation, creativity, and collective action. By working together, we can raise public awareness about the importance of renewable energy and create a more sustainable future for all.
