Pumped Hydro Storage: The Unsung Hero of Renewable Energy That’s Not as Green as You Think

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Pumped Hydro Storage: The Unsung Hero of Renewable Energy That’s Not as Green as You Think

As the world continues to shift towards renewable energy sources, pumped hydro storage (PHS) has been touted as a game-changer in the industry. Proponents claim that this technology can store excess energy generated from solar and wind power, providing a stable and reliable source of electricity when the sun isn’t shining or the winds aren’t blowing. But beneath the marketing hype, is PHS really the eco-friendly solution it’s cracked up to be?

The truth is, PHS has a dirty secret: it relies heavily on fossil fuels to pump water up and down the storage reservoirs. In fact, a study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that the energy required to pump water up the hill can be as high as 10-15% of the total energy stored. This doesn’t even take into account the energy needed to build and maintain the massive infrastructure required for PHS – think of the concrete, steel, and labor required to construct these massive dams and tunnels.

But even if we overlook the environmental impact of PHS’s operational requirements, there’s another issue that’s been glossed over: the sheer scale of these projects. To put it simply, PHS requires a lot of space. We’re talking tens of thousands of acres of land, often in remote areas that are home to fragile ecosystems. And let’s not forget the impact of these massive infrastructure projects on local communities – the displacement of people, the destruction of habitats, and the disruption of traditional ways of life.

So, why haven’t we heard more about the downsides of PHS? One reason is that the technology has been around for so long – it’s been in use since the 1920s – that it’s been largely overlooked by the renewable energy community. But another reason might be that the industry has a vested interest in promoting PHS as a green solution. After all, if we start to question the environmental credentials of PHS, we might start to wonder if other forms of renewable energy – like solar and wind – are the real solution to our energy needs.

Despite these concerns, PHS still has its defenders. They argue that the benefits of PHS far outweigh the drawbacks, particularly when it comes to providing grid stability and balancing out the intermittency of renewable energy sources. And it’s true that PHS has been instrumental in helping to integrate wind and solar power into the grid.

But as we move forward into a future where renewable energy is increasingly dominant, we need to have a more nuanced conversation about the role of PHS in our energy mix. Rather than treating it as a silver bullet, we need to consider it as just one tool in our toolkit – one that requires careful consideration of its environmental and social impacts. By doing so, we can create a more sustainable and equitable energy future that works for everyone, not just those with a vested interest in the status quo.
