As the world continues to transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, one technology has been quietly providing the backbone of the grid: pumped hydro storage (PHS). But despite its widespread adoption, PHS has a dirty secret: it’s not as green as you think.

Pumped hydro storage, a method of energy storage that harnesses the power of water to store excess energy generated by renewable sources like solar and wind, has been the go-to solution for grid operators for decades. But the reality is that it’s not as revolutionary as we’ve been led to believe. In fact, the environmental impact of PHS is far more significant than its proponents would have you believe.

For starters, the construction of PHS facilities requires the excavation of massive amounts of rock and soil, which can lead to deforestation, habitat destruction, and even landslides. In the United States alone, the construction of a single PHS facility can generate up to 2 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions – equivalent to the annual emissions of 400,000 cars. And that’s not even considering the energy required to operate these facilities, which can be significant.

But the problems with PHS don’t stop there. The technology is also notoriously inflexible, requiring a reliable source of energy to pump water back up to the reservoir – a luxury that’s not always available. This means that PHS facilities often rely on fossil fuels to operate, effectively canceling out any environmental benefits.

So, why are we still relying so heavily on PHS? The answer lies in the fact that it’s a tried-and-true technology that requires minimal upfront investment. But at what cost? By prioritizing PHS over more innovative, sustainable solutions, we’re slowing down the transition to a renewable energy future.

It’s time to think outside the box – or in this case, the dam. There are better, more forward-thinking ways to store energy, like compressed air energy storage, flow batteries, and even advanced forms of pumped hydro storage that are designed to be more efficient and environmentally friendly.

As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, it’s time to take a closer look at the role that pumped hydro storage is playing – and to start exploring alternative solutions that can help us get to a 100% renewable energy future. By doing so, we can unlock a cleaner, more sustainable energy future – one that doesn’t come at the cost of our planet’s health.
