Climate Change is Not the Biggest Threat to Humanity – Yet

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Climate Change is Not the Biggest Threat to Humanity – Yet

As I sit here, sipping my morning coffee and staring out at the grey skies, I’m struck by a thought that seems counterintuitive in today’s climate-obsessed world: climate change might not be the biggest threat to humanity that we think it is. Now, before you start throwing virtual tomatoes at me, let me clarify – I’m not saying climate change isn’t a major issue, or that we shouldn’t be doing everything in our power to mitigate its effects. But what I am saying is that it’s not the only, or even the biggest, threat that we’re facing.

Let’s face it: climate change is a complex, multifaceted problem that’s been getting a lot of attention in recent years. And rightly so – the science is clear: human activities like burning fossil fuels and deforestation are releasing massive amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to rising temperatures and all sorts of nasty consequences, from more frequent natural disasters to sea-level rise. But here’s the thing: while climate change is certainly a pressing issue, it’s not the only one that we should be worried about.

Take, for example, the growing threat of nuclear war. We’ve been living in a world where the threat of nuclear annihilation has been hanging over us like a Sword of Damocles for decades, and yet it’s only in recent years that it’s started to get the attention it deserves. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock, which measures the likelihood of human extinction, has been ticking closer and closer to midnight in recent years, and it’s now just 100 seconds to midnight. That’s closer than it’s ever been.

And then there’s the issue of pandemics. We’ve seen time and time again how quickly and easily diseases can spread around the world, causing untold suffering and death. The COVID-19 pandemic is a stark reminder of this, and it’s only now starting to recede from view. But the truth is, we’re still woefully unprepared for the next big pandemic, and it’s only a matter of time before another one strikes.

So why are we so focused on climate change, when there are other pressing issues that demand our attention? I think it’s because climate change is a neat, tidy problem that we can blame on one thing: human activity. It’s a problem that we can solve, if we just change our ways and start using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. But nuclear war and pandemics are much harder to pin down. They’re complex, messy problems that don’t have easy solutions, and they require a much more nuanced and multifaceted approach.

But here’s the thing: we can’t just choose one problem to focus on, and ignore the others. We need to be thinking about all of these challenges simultaneously, and working to address them in a way that’s holistic and integrated. That means investing in renewable energy, yes – but also in disaster preparedness and response, and in the development of new vaccines and treatments for diseases. It means working to reduce the risk of nuclear war, through diplomacy and disarmament. And it means taking a long-term view, thinking about the kinds of world we want to create for ourselves and for future generations.

In short, climate change is a big problem, but it’s not the only one. And until we start thinking about all of these challenges together, we’ll never really make progress on any of them. So let’s get real, folks. Let’s stop pretending that climate change is the only thing that matters, and start thinking about the big picture. Because if we don’t, we might just find ourselves facing a future that’s even more uncertain, and more frightening, than we ever could have imagined.
