Why International Agreements on Climate Change Still Matter in a Changing World

Posted on May 13, 2025 By Dante No Comments on Why International Agreements on Climate Change Still Matter in a Changing World

Climate change feels like one of those issues that’s enormous and overwhelming—so big that it’s easy to tune out or think, “What difference can one agreement really make?” But the truth is, international agreements on climate change are some of the most crucial tools we have to try and coordinate global action on this mess. They’re not magic solutions, but they lay down a framework for countries to work together rather than scrap it out solo.

Think about it like this: The atmosphere doesn’t care about borders. Carbon emissions from one country drift across oceans, deserts, and mountains to warm the planet everywhere. So what one nation does in isolation just won’t be enough. International climate agreements are attempts to recognize this interconnectedness and create a plan where everyone tries to do their part.

The most famous example is the Paris Agreement from 2015. Almost every country on Earth signed up, agreeing to try to keep global temperature rise “well below” 2°C above pre-industrial levels, aiming for 1.5°C if possible. That’s huge—because for the first time, almost all nations were on the record committing to reduce their carbon footprints. What makes Paris stand out from earlier attempts is its flexibility—allowing countries to set their own targets (called nationally determined contributions) instead of negotiating a one-size-fits-all deal. This bottom-up approach has pros and cons, but it helps accommodate different development stages and capacities.

Of course, pledges on paper don’t always translate into action on the ground. There’s frustration and skepticism around whether countries will meet their targets, especially when enforcement mechanisms are weak. But these agreements create political pressure and a platform for accountability. There’s a whole global spotlight on these commitments, and public awareness is rising, encouraging governments to follow through.

Before Paris, the Kyoto Protocol was a milestone effort—it required developed countries to cut emissions but didn’t hold developing nations to binding targets. This caused some geopolitical tensions and limitations. The shift to Paris’ universal participation signals progress in how the world tackles climate change—seen more as a shared challenge, not just a problem for the richest countries.

Looking ahead, international agreements continue evolving with new challenges. There’s talk about addressing not just carbon emissions but broader issues like climate financing (supporting poorer countries affected by climate impacts), loss and damage, and adaptation efforts. As climate impacts become more visible—wildfires, floods, droughts—the urgency to make these multinational pacts more robust grows.

In essence, international agreements on climate change aren’t perfect, but they symbolize a collective willingness to face a global threat together rather than individually. They set the stage for cooperation, innovation, and hopefully, real progress. Without some form of these accords, tackling climate change would be a disjointed mess. So, despite their flaws and struggles, they’re a foundation worth paying attention to—and, critically, building on.
